Wedding DJ at Belle Mer
I am John Hathaway, and Elation Entertainment is my one person operation in Shirley, Massachusetts. I have DJed weddings at Belle Mer in Newport, RI, about 95 miles out and still inside my service area, so no travel fee. When the Water Salon's glass doors open to the lawn, the room stops being a room.
Belle Mer from the DJ Booth
Belle Mer sits on Goat Island with seven acres of lawn on Narragansett Bay around it. The Water Salon is the main space, a wall of glass doors that open fully onto that lawn, four season and open air rather than tented, holding 280 for dinner and dancing or 450 seated. Those doors are the acoustic decision. Closed, it behaves like a room and dinner conversation carries over the music. Open, the sound leaves for the water and a level that felt right an hour earlier reads thin. The Island House is the smaller half at 180 for dinner and dancing, with the Newport Bridge and the Vanderbilt Light out the windows and a shell path of lit fountains leading to it. The Loft above holds 30.
How I Run a Wedding at Belle Mer
The ceremony happens out on the lawn above Narragansett Bay, where wind is the variable rather than volume. It gets its own system with wireless microphones for your officiant and your readers, placed near the seats and checked out there once I can hear what the water is doing that afternoon. Cocktail hour spreads across the lawn or along the shell path toward the Island House, so it gets covered rather than left to spill from the main space. Dinner sits in the Water Salon at a level the far tables can talk through. Once the floor opens I set for whether those glass doors are open or closed, because they are two different rooms. Your coordinator holds the timeline and the announcements run against it.
Getting to Belle Mer from Shirley
Newport is about 95 miles from Shirley, close to two hours on I-495 and I-95 and then over the bridges onto Aquidneck Island. Summer traffic at the crossings is the variable, so I leave with margin built in and the arrival window itself does not move. I am on site 2.5 to 3 hours before guests. Goat Island is reached by causeway, so the vehicle route and the load in slot get settled with the venue ahead of the date rather than sorted out on arrival.

Wedding DJ Questions About Belle Mer
Have you DJed a wedding at Belle Mer?
Yes. Newport is the far end of my regular ground and I plan the drive for it, but the space is the part worth knowing about. A room whose whole wall opens onto a lawn is a different setup with the doors open than with them closed, and that gets decided before I arrive.
Does the lawn ceremony need its own sound system?
Yes. Seven acres of open lawn on the bay gives a voice nothing to carry it, and the wind off the water changes what works from one afternoon to the next. The ceremony gets a dedicated system with wireless microphones for your officiant and your readers, placed near the seats and level checked out there rather than assumed.
How do the glass doors change the reception sound?
Completely. Closed, the Water Salon holds music like a room and dinner talk carries over it. Open to the lawn, the sound leaves and a level that was right ten minutes earlier reads thin. I set for both states and adjust when the doors move, instead of picking one and living with it all night.
Can you cover the Island House and the lawn together?
Yes, and that shape is common here. The Island House holds 180 for dinner and dancing with the bridge and the Vanderbilt Light out the windows, and the lawn and the shell path sit outside it. Each area gets sound of its own, standing and checked before guests arrive, so nothing goes quiet while people are walking between them.
