Wedding DJ at Codman Estate
I am John, and Elation Entertainment is my one person operation in Shirley, Massachusetts. I have DJed weddings at the Codman Estate in Lincoln, MA, about 20 miles away and inside my service area, so no travel fee. The Carriage House is a small hard room, so I spread the sound rather than push it.
Codman Estate from the DJ Booth
The Carriage House function room is roughly 31 feet square with two alcoves off it, wood panelled, dating to around 1870. Indoors it seats 70 at rounds, or 50 once you want room to dance, so the tables and the floor are competing for the same footprint. Hard wood and a compact room mean a level that reads fine at the speaker is loud in the alcoves, so I use smaller sources placed near people rather than one pair aimed down the room. With the tent adjoining, the space opens to 150, or 135 with dancing, and the two halves stop behaving alike. The Carriage House holds sound and the tent lets it go. That seam is where the setup gets decided.
How I Run a Wedding at Codman Estate
Ceremonies happen out on the grounds, often in the Italian garden with the statuary and the lily pool, or in the English cottage garden. Outdoors means its own system and wireless microphones for your officiant and your readers, placed so the vows carry against open ground instead of getting lost in it. Cocktail hour moves back toward the Carriage House. Dinner and dancing then sit either inside, contained and close, or across the Carriage House and the tent together, which is really two rooms sharing one timeline. I set the level for the half your guests are standing in. Announcements run against your coordinator's schedule, and the move from the gardens back to the Carriage House is the piece I plan around.
Getting to Codman Estate from Shirley
Lincoln is about 20 miles from Shirley, 30 to 40 minutes out Route 2 and Route 117. I arrive 2.5 to 3 hours before guests. On a 16 acre estate with a tent in play that window does real work: power confirmed, cable run across grass and taped where people cross it, gear covered against weather, the garden ceremony system up and checked, then the Carriage House set while it is still empty. The season runs April through November, so an early or late date changes what the light is doing at load in.

Wedding DJ Questions About Codman Estate
Have you DJed a wedding at the Codman Estate?
Yes. It is about 20 miles from Shirley and I have run weddings at the Carriage House. It is a small, hard, wood panelled room and it punishes a system that was set for a bigger space, so most of the value of having been there is knowing to start smaller.
How do you set up in the Carriage House?
Small and distributed. The room is roughly 31 feet square with two alcoves off it, and wood panelling gives everything back, so one loud pair at the end would be unpleasant in the corners. I use smaller sources placed near people, keep the floor clear of cable, and set levels once the room is dressed.
Does a garden ceremony need its own sound system?
Yes. The gardens sit out on the grounds with nothing overhead, so a voice has to be carried rather than left to travel on its own. The ceremony site gets a dedicated system with wireless microphones for your officiant and your readers, placed and checked out there well before anyone walks down.
Can you run the Carriage House and the tent together?
Yes, and that is the larger version of this venue, up to 150 with the tent adjoining, or 135 once you want room to dance. The two halves behave differently, one containing sound and one releasing it, so they get planned as two spaces on one timeline rather than as one big room.
