Downtown means a hotel: a historic ballroom, a service entrance, a house coordinator who owns the timeline, and a room with hard floors and real height. A short drive south the picture changes completely, to a conservatory full of glass and plants or a lawn running down to Narragansett Bay. Guest lists tend to mix local family with a Boston and New York contingent, which usually means the music has to travel further than one era.
Getting to Providence from Shirley
Providence is about 70 miles from Shirley, roughly 90 minutes on I-495 and I-95 or Route 146, and Warwick is about 76 miles and an hour and a half. I-95 through downtown and the Route 146 merge are the variables on a Saturday afternoon, so I leave early for both. Arrival is 2.5 to 3 hours before guests.
